August is a very busy month in the East Devon area, Summer is here (although someone should tell the weather that!) and holiday-makers are flooding into the South West. For the next few weeks the beaches and tourist attractions will be packed, but never fear, there are plenty of activities lined up that will keep you entertained, rain or shine (but most likely rain).
From the 1st of August till the 8th, Sidmouth will be hosting the Sidmouth Folk Festival, an annual event that sees some of the UK’s best folk acts congregate in Devon for a week filled with music, singing, dancing, pub sessions, workshops, concerts, storytelling, cream teas and lying on the beach. For those that have never experienced the folk week before, it can be thought of as a collection of smaller festivals in the same place at the same time, with something for everyone and a very friendly atmosphere. Artists performing during the week include Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Show of Hands, Blowzilla, Dick Gaughan, Karine Polwart and many more. The Sheldon Open Air Theatre in Dunsford has a number of performances during the month of August. On the 1st of the month they have ABBA Magic - ‘The best ABBA tribute band around’ in concert, then on the 6th there are the Fab Beatles - ‘One of the most popular tribute bands’ who are back for a fourth year and finally on the 13th Diamondogz Glam Rock Band will be performing a number of 70’s hits. With all of these events there is a licensed bar and barbecue food on sale, an easily accessible wheelchair tier with bookable spaces and seating on grass terraces. Tickets are £7.50 before 30 June, £10 advance – until day before concert, £12.50 – on day of concert, £7.50 child – 14 and under bought any date. During August Powderham Castle will be hosting a number of open-air theatrical and operatic productions. First off, on the 3rd is a production of Peter Pan that promises unforgettable fantasy, magic and humour in a never-ending childhood adventure on the island of Neverland. Come early with a picnic and join Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and friends for some great family entertainment. Performance time: 6.30pm (Gates open: 5.30pm) Adult/Senior £12, Child £8, Family (2+2) £32. Then on the 15th of August there will be a production of the opera Carmen, the music, full of extravagant melody and rich in operatic hits has captivated audiences over the decades. The energy and passion in the dramatic story of Carmen promises you a vibrant and unforgettable evening. Performance time: 8pm (Gates Open: 7pm), Adult £25, Child £10. The following night sees another operatic production - The Marriage of Figaro, a joyful farce in which we witness the foibles and intrigues used to reveal the indiscretions of a philandering nobleman, Count Almaviva. Some of Mozart’s most sublime music features in this bittersweet yet uplifting comedy. Performance time: 7.30pm (Gates Open: 6.30pm), Adult £25, Child £10. Finally on the 21st there will be a theatrical production of Little Women where Theatreworks perform their much acclaimed theatre production in the relaxed setting of the Pleasure Garden. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter has programmed a large number of free family events throughout August in a number of locations while the museum itself is being refurbished.
