Ottery St Mary
One Of The South West's Oldest Towns.
Come and see its charming narrow winding streets. Visit the fine Georgian buildings and impressive Church of St Mary, the heart of the town.
Ottery St Mary is also well known for its annual Tar Barrelling event. The tradition originated centuries ago and is held on November 5th every year. Each of Ottery's central public houses sponsors a barrel. A week before the 5th November, the barrels are soaked with tar. Then, they are lit outside each of the pubs. Once the flames begun to pour out, local people lift them on their shoulders and run through the streets.
They are barrels for children and women but there are some weighing 30 kilos and more! It's a dramatic occasion, and if you do plan to attend be sure to arrive on time, as the streets will be absolutely packed and you may wish to choose a prime position.
